The Balham Grove Demon

My story begins when my parents moved into 85 Balham Grove, Balham, London SW12 8QT in the late summer of 1965. My sister was less than a year old and a beautiful bright angelic child. The following year my sister was suddenly taken seriously ill one evening and within 7 hours had died at the age of just 18 months old. I was born in mid 1968 and was a healthy and happy buoyant child, and only child.

Has a child living at 85 Balham Grove I experienced many things that I thought were just figments of my imagination or dreams. Very common when you look back at some of your childhood experiences, but they did seem so very real at the time and I have never forgotten them.

I think the worst out of many of my memories was the first time I meet it – The Balham Grove Demon.

I was about 6 years old and was downstairs with my mother one morning before school. She sent me upstairs for her hair brush that she had forgotten to bring down with her. I headed up the stairs to her large bedroom at the front of the house. Has I walked in to the room there was a figure standing there on the opposite side of the double bed. The figure is a little hard to describe. It was almost the size of a fully-grown man, but had no facial features and was completely black. I of course turned and ran and could feel I was being chased. I ran across the landing and downstairs as fast as I could go. My mother said, “where’s the hair brush?” and I replied there was something up there, she said to me “don’t be so silly” and went and got the brush herself.

Other times on the stair case I would be walking up and hear the figure which would make an aggressive animal like growling sound of which I would quickly retreat down the stairs again to afraid to go up.

On at least 3 occasions when I was asleep in my room I would get woken up by something and I would lay there terrified at a figure that would be in the room, just standing there. All three times it stood in a different place.

Looking back now
I of course now know that these events were not just in my imagination or dreams, that’s just how, like so many other experiences I dealt with things at the time.

The Balham Grove Demon
I gave it this name as a reference for myself. I will say in my professional opinion as a Psychic Medium, that this entity was never human in any way and was 100% dark and evil. I believe this entity enjoys playing games with peoples feelings and causing pain and misery.

More Background
A few years ago, I had a long conversation with my mother about my sister being taken suddenly ill and she said that she always felt that the house was unlucky, and it had a dark feeling around it and she was never comfortable living there. She also said that she should never have moved there. She said that her mother (my Grandmother) was a once well known and respected medium and from the moment she walked up to the front door for the first time in 1965, she said that there was something evil in the house and she never entered the building. In fact, my Grandmother never crossed the door step in the eleven years of my parents living there. She just would not enter the house.

Strange Coincidence
My sister died at the age 18 Months old from a very rare virus (1 in a 100,000 at the time). So how can it be that the couple next door at number 83 (joined directly to 85) also lost their little girl at the same age  a couple of years before? What are the odds of this?

Another Coincidence
I used to teach IT from my Gloucester based studio. In late April 2013 I got a call from a lady living in surrey regarding some tuition with a project she was working on. She booked a day’s training with me in early May 2013 and turned up on the day ready to learn. We sat down at the computer and I said, “I used to live in London when I was a young”. She replied, “oh what part?” And I said “Balham” and her reaction/body language was a little odd. She said, “how strange, as I have just moved away from Balham” and asked what street I lived on, to which I replied, “Balham Grove”. She looked even more shocked and said, “what number?” and I said “85”. She then said “I knew you were going to say that”.

It turns out the lady lived just around the corner on Temperley Road, which backed on to our old garden and was only a couple of doors away, and her friends lived at 85 Balham Grove, which was now 2 separate flats. It’s incredible that we both know the same property considering she came from surrey and I live in Gloucestershire.

She told me a few stories about what had been going on over the past few years. She told me that the lady a few years ago had the upstairs flat in 85 had gone insane and was sectioned and also a neighbour of a couple of doors away who I remembered from living there had done the same.

Finally Thoughts
The properties on Balham Gove near number 85 were built in 1850, I wonder if anyone else has seen the Balham Grove Demon or knows of any sudden deaths or tragedies in any of the properties close to number 85? I am convinced there are many stories to be told of pain and suffering and strongly believe that there is something very wrong with Balham Grove.

Domesday Book
I have found that according to the Domesday Book, most of Balham was once a roman settlement and goes back as far as records goes.
